Oostende is your destination if you want to wander through the mind of James Ensor (1860-1949). This house was indeed the operating base of the world-famous painter from 1917 onwards. Centuries ago, the Romans set up a series of army camps on both sides of the North Sea in defence of their conquered territory. One of these camps stood on a raised sand ridge which at that time jutted out like a spit of land in the then coastal plane. The only castellum that has been recovered along the Flemish North Sea coast is that of the later town of Oudenburg, situated at a stone's throw from the coast between Ostend and Bruges. In the newly reorganised Romeins Archeologisch Museum (Roman Archaeological Museum), or RAM as it is now known, in Oudenburg, you can find out more about this castellum and all other facets of the museum. Visitors can enjoy the results of 50 years of excavations and archaeological research in Oudenburg that are exhibited at the RAM.
Talbot House
